PhotoVoice is a community based participatory research (CBPR) which is based on photo taking (Pritzker, LaChapelle and Tatum, 2012: 2247). Caroline Wang and her colleagues developed PhotoVoice in the 1990s to work with women in Yunnan in the project of Ford Foundation-supported Women’s Reproduction Health and Development Program (Wang, 2003: 180). Wang and Burris shared that (1997: 369) ‘PhotoVoice is a method by which people can identify, represent, and enhance their communities through a specific photography technique.’ By inviting community members to take pictures to record their experiences, reflect their situations and reach community stakeholders, we can better understand the insiders’ views, and formulate appropriate policies for community members.
We introduced different PhotoVoice practice in Shamshuipo community and collected the voices from different groups include men, ethnic minorities and new arrivals. Through listening their voices, we came to experience their lived experiences, hopes, joys, difficulties and barriers in integrating the communities. Maybe, PhotoVoice is the first step to have dialogue, by sharing and listening others, we can reflect and build up praxis knowledge and practices for the society.
